What is Blood360 Remote Issue?
“In its simplest form it allows the Pathology Lab to store Stock Blood Units in a fridge closer to where it is needed, and then issue them remotely. These Stock Units can be stored in a normal fridge or better still it can be stored in one of the new Multi-Draw or Vending units available on the market today.”
The Remote Issue approach is ideal for a large or small campus, remote community hospitals, private hospitals or Pathology Labs looking to expand further into the community – it allows Pathology Laboratories to have a campus wide view of blood stock levels, as well as giving the same secure controlled access to blood fridges from a remote location.
Blood360 Remote Issue also gives a greater granular control over fridge access and user guidance by only unlocking the correct compartment for the correct blood in multi-compartment fridges. Remote Issue saves money by reducing blood waste, reducing transport costs and bringing warehouse style stock management to the blood stock – This cost saving aspect of Blood360 Remote Issue means return on the initial investment is achieved over a shorter period of time.
The Challenge
The Electronic Blood Tracking project originated from a blood safety stakeholder workshop held by the NPSA, the NBTC and SHOT at the Royal College of Pathologists in December 2004. The aim of the workshop was to identify effective local solutions to the misidentification of patients receiving blood transfusions. At this workshop the NPSA announced a target of reducing the number of ABO incompatible transfusion incidents by 50 per cent over three to five years, as measured by the SHOT database.
There are many steps involved in the transfusion process and it involves a variety of healthcare professionals. At any stage errors can occur which can result in a patient receiving an incorrect blood transfusion. Analysis of 221 errors in 130 ABO incompatible transfusions reported to SHOT between 1999 and 2003 showed that 59% (131) of errors involved collection of the wrong unit of blood from the storage site and/or administration to the wrong patient.
The main outcome of this project was the need for tools providing better safety for Patients receiving a Blood Transfusion; Electronic Blood Tracking Solutions such as Blood360 is now the main tool which provides the safety net for those needs.
