Access
Blood360 Kiosk

A key part of the Blood360 Electronic Blood Tracking System is secure access to Blood Products. These Products include Red Cells, Platelets, FFP, Cryo and Batch Products. Each of these Blood Products requires storage in different containers such as Fridges, Agitators, Freezers and even Cupboards. The Kiosk Provides this access control via fingerprints and other identity checking methods.

Secure Any Container

The Kiosk can lock virtually any container for Blood Products – this includes Fridge, Agitators, Freezers and Cupboards.

Fingerprint Access

By Default the Kiosk controls access to Blood Products via the use of fingerprints. It can also use Barcoded cards, PIN entry and ActiveDirectory.

Collection
Blood360 Blood Collection

Once the user credentials are checked by Blood360 they can then proceed with a process called Blood Out. This process involves the User confirming the Patients Identity using a collection barcode. Once confirmed the User may proceed with the removal of the Blood Product. The Blood Product Container will be unlocked and once the Blood Product is in hand the User will be prompted to scan the Blood Product to confirm it is the “Right Blood for the Right Patient”.

Positive Patient ID

Positive Patient ID is performed at the Kiosk using barcoded collection cards or using a mobile device screen with a barcode.

Right Blood, Right Patient

Once Positive Patient ID has been performed the Kiosk makes sure the User collects the correct Blood Product for the correct Patient.

Bedside
Blood360 Bedside

Blood360 Bedside App manages the entire Blood Product Management Process on the Ward. It begins with the requesting of Blood to a supported Porter Management system such as TeleTracking to Ward Receipt and then finally a Blood Transfusion. Throughout the processes Positive Patient ID is enforced and User Credentials are recorded for Audit purposes and access purposes.

User Audit

The Bedside App makes sure only qualified members of staff can access it and ever action is logged for Audit.

Bedside Positive Patient ID

All bedside activities require that the Patient is correctly identified via a barcode on the wristband or an RFID scan.

Transfusion
Blood360 Transfusion

Blood360 Bedside App manages the entire Blood Transfusion Process. It begins with a Pre-Transfusion questionnaire. Before a Transfusion can begin the User must follow the onscreen Transfusion process including scanning the Blood Product and Patient ID. If all checks pass then the Transfusion may begin. During the Transfusion the User is prompted to record observations and then finally record the end of Transfusion. The App can also manage an Adverse Reaction.

Full Transfusion Process

The Bedside App makes sure only qualified members of staff can perform a Transfusion and every action is logged for Audit.

Blood Unit & Positive Patient ID Checks at the Bedside

Before the Transfusion can begins both the Blood Product and the Patient are scanned to make sure the Transfusion can go ahead.

Porter
Blood360 Porter Request

Blood360 Bedside App allows Ward Staff to request when they require Blood Products directly from the Bedside of the Patient. Positive Patient ID is performed and a time of delivery can be entered. The request is then sent directly to the Portering system and actioned. All updates are sent directly to Blood360 keeping staff updated.

Full Porter Software Integration

Blood360 is full integrated into most Portering systems using HL7 or Web-services.

Saves Valuable Time and Money

Using the Porter Request system allows Ward staff to continue their clinical duties saving time and money for the Hospital.

Remote Issue
Blood360 Remote Issue

Blood360 Remote Issue allows the Pathology Lab to store Stock Blood Units in a fridge closer to where it is needed, and then issue them remotely. A Compatibility Label is then printed at the Kiosk once all checks have been completed. These Stock Units can be stored in a normal fridge or better still they can be stored in one of the new Intelligent Multi-Draw units available on the market today.

Remote Issue Patient Check

Positive Patient ID is performed at the Kiosk using barcoded collection cards or using a mobile device screen with a barcode. This data is then veried for Remote Issue.

Compatibility Label Printed

Once Positive Patient ID has been performed the Kiosk makes sure the User collects the correct Blood Product for the correct Patient and a Compatibility Label is printed.

What is Blood360 Remote Issue?

“In its simplest form it allows the Pathology Lab to store Stock Blood Units in a fridge closer to where it is needed, and then issue them remotely. These Stock Units can be stored in a normal fridge or better still it can be stored in one of the new Multi-Draw or Vending units available on the market today.”

The Remote Issue approach is ideal for a large or small campus, remote community hospitals, private hospitals or Pathology Labs looking to expand further into the community – it allows Pathology Laboratories to have a campus wide view of blood stock levels, as well as giving the same secure controlled access to blood fridges from a remote location.

Blood360 Remote Issue also gives a greater granular control over fridge access and user guidance by only unlocking the correct compartment for the correct blood in multi-compartment fridges. Remote Issue saves money by reducing blood waste, reducing transport costs and bringing warehouse style stock management to the blood stock – This cost saving aspect of Blood360 Remote Issue means return on the initial investment is achieved over a shorter period of time.

The Challenge

The Electronic Blood Tracking project originated from a blood safety stakeholder workshop held by the NPSA, the NBTC and SHOT at the Royal College of Pathologists in December 2004. The aim of the workshop was to identify effective local solutions to the misidentification of patients receiving blood transfusions. At this workshop the NPSA announced a target of reducing the number of ABO incompatible transfusion incidents by 50 per cent over three to five years, as measured by the SHOT database.

There are many steps involved in the transfusion process and it involves a variety of healthcare professionals. At any stage errors can occur which can result in a patient receiving an incorrect blood transfusion. Analysis of 221 errors in 130 ABO incompatible transfusions reported to SHOT between 1999 and 2003 showed that 59% (131) of errors involved collection of the wrong unit of blood from the storage site and/or administration to the wrong patient.

The main outcome of this project was the need for tools providing better safety for Patients receiving a Blood Transfusion; Electronic Blood Tracking Solutions such as Blood360 is now the main tool which provides the safety net for those needs.

Slide 1
Benefits to Patients

> Reduce the risk of the Transfusion of incompatible ABO Blood
> Reduce the risk of Adverse Reactions
> Reduce the risk of Transfusion of expired units
> Reduce the risk of Transfusion of units that have failed cold chain
> Reduce the risk of a Transfusion without Sample Validity checks
> Better patient outcomes

Slide 2
Benefits to Staff

> Staff feel confident they have selected the correct Blood for the Patient
> Staff can perform a Patient Identity check at the Kiosk and at the Bedside
> Porters can collect Blood Units rather than Ward Staff
> Staff are alerted when Observations need to take place during the Transfusion
> Staff are instantly alerted if the unit has failed cold chain, sample validity checks and reservation checks

Slide 3
Benefits to Lab

> Lab Staff time is saved by delegating the responsibility of Blood management and access to Blood360
> Lab Staff can view the current status of every unit of Blood within the domain of the Hospital network
> Lab Staff can instantly access data about a particular unit or history during an Audit
> Less Blood Unit wastage as units can be returned to the Lab knowing Cold Chain has been maintained
> 100% Traceability of the Blood Unit is maintained

Slide 4
Remote Issue Benefits

> Reduction in trips to Remote Locations – as you can manage the Remote Fridges as modern warehouses do with Minimum and Optimum Stocks Levels with weekly rather than daily replenishment etc.

> Improved Efficiency & Improved Demand Management.

> Reduced impact of Fridge Hardware Failure through Smart Distribution of Stock Blood.

> Easier to manage demand and respond to special areas such as the ER – a single Issue Fridge for all may not be the most efficient way for your location.

> Pathology Labs expanding out of the Hospital Campus to a greater audience – this is true Hub & Spoke – one huge Pathology Lab off Campus could in theory Remote Issue to many different venues spread over hundreds of square miles.

Slide 6
Porter Integration Benefits

> Ward Staff can quickly request a Blood Unit electronically at the Patient Bedside
> Ward Staff can set a time for collection to match the Patients needs
> Ward Staff delegate the collection of Blood Units to a Porter saving Ward Staff clinical time
> Porter receives the Blood Unit request in real-time
> Porter does not need to come to the Ward to get the collection slip for the Blood Unit
> Once the Porter has collected the Blood Unit an electronic message is sent the the Ward Staff
