Distributing Pet Blood Geographically to Improve Pet Safety
The Pet Blood Bank
Most, if not all, Vets are linked to a Pet Blood Bank of varying sizes that provide Blood for all the different animals from Dogs to the unique oddities of the Alpaca herd Blood.
Most of these current symbiotic relationships between the Pet Blood Bank and the Vets are paper and logistically intensive. They are rarely digital and require the physical sending of Blood Units often via expensive express logistics all backed up with paper heavy processes.
Blood360 is a very powerful Blood Management tool that can help both the Vet and the Pet Blood Bank to become digital and more importantly efficient benefitting the animal patient.
Blood360 brings its powerful Remote Issue solution to the Pet Blood Bank allowing Stock Blood to be spread out to different Hubs around the supported area and released electronically when needed. This saves the late night call outs and the costly same-day logistics.

What is currently happening at the Pet Blood Bank?
- Pet Blood Bank donor centres collect donated Blood from healthy Dogs over 25kg (United Kingdom)
- Donor number is placed on the unit and it is then sent via Temperature Monitored transport courier to the Pet Blood Bank Hub
- Units are then reconciled as soon as possible – often as early as 6am the next morning
- Once reconciled they can be processed
- Initially the units are placed in a Quarantine Fridge or Freezer until Screen Blood Tests have completed
- The Pet Blood Bank provides Red Cells, Platelets, FFP and Cryo. It produces its own Platelets from a single bag and it is not pooled (UK)
- Once the Blood Tests are back and screened by Vets the units can move from Quarantine into Stock for Supply
- Many Pet Blood Bank’s have invested in a Donation Software System similar to that used by the NHSBT for Humans – but Microsoft XL or self developed systems are common
How does the Vet currently engage with the Pet Blood Bank?
- Vets register with the Pet Blood Bank
- Any Vet can request Blood 24/7 (UK)
- Vets prepare a request to the Pet Blood Bank
- Requests are checked against stock and Blood Type and Requirements are checked
- Crossmatched Blood Units are sent to Vets via special Courier
- Depending on the Vet and Stock the units will go out within 90 minutes or will go overnight
- The packages are sent Temperature controlled and monitored
- There is a varying acceptance procedures depending on the Vet and urgency
- Normally the units are checked against dog and the delivery note and then placed into the Blood Fridge
- Reception procedures are often paper based similar to the UK NHS Red Book
- Little or no responsibility recording of who received the Blood Unit and what happened to it on arrival – little traceability
- Don’t report if unit was used or any positive or negative reactions to unit

What are the current challenges for the modern Pet Blood Bank?
- Stock is not recorded electronically for Vets to see
- There is a Central Hub for Blood which is not distributed for speed or risk
- Heavily Paper based and very manual process
- Cold chain not recorded against Blood Unit record
- Responsibility of Blood Unit not recorded for Traceability
- Vet have no electronic view of Blood Units available
- Requesting is manual
- Requesting is not recording Blood Type which limits the ability to remotely issue a unit
- Little visual recording of reception of Blood Unit
- Little or no recording of outcome of the Blood Unit fate
- Little Blood Unit Traceability and who handled the Blood Unit for storage and transfusion
How can Blood360 help?
- Bring Human Blood Full Traceability to the Pet Blood Bank and Vet environment
- Improve distribution and Stock availability with Remote Allocation of Units
- Reduce the Emergency deliveries
- Record Wastage of Blood Units
- Record Fate of Unit
- Improved Cold Chain with Blood360 Temperature Monitoring
- View of Blood Handling within Vet Practice
- Positive Pet ID at the bedside
- Electronic Recording of previous Pet transfusions using neck RFID tag
- Electronic Recording of Pet Adverse Reaction of Blood Transfusion
Blood360 becomes PetBlood360
