The Challenge of Handling Expressed Breast Milk (EBM)
It is important within NICU and the Maternity ward in general that a mothers milk that has been expressed must be fed to their baby. This is where Milk360 comes into play as it managed the entire process from express to feed. “Right Milk, Right Infant“
Breast Milk tracking is now becoming more and more a necessity and is even included in the HIMSS Level 6 accreditation. This means there is now a requirement to perform positive patient identification at the cot side making sure the milk expressed by the mother is fed to their infant.
The Challenge of Blood Sample Tracking
There are many steps involved in the transfusion process and it involves a variety of healthcare professionals. At any stage errors can occur which can result in a patient receiving an incorrect blood transfusion. Analysis of 221 errors in 130 ABO incompatible transfusions reported to SHOT between 1999 and 2003 showed that 59% (131) of errors involved collection of the wrong unit of blood from the storage site and/or administration to the wrong patient.
The main outcome of this project was the need for tools providing better safety for Patients receiving a Blood Transfusion; Electronic Blood Tracking Solutions such as Blood360 is now the main tool which provides the safety net for those needs.
